<image:title>Selected Works - Modern Sky Festival Helsinki 2015</image:title>
<image:caption>Modern Sky Festival Helsinki was organized for the first time in 2015. It was a collaboration with Chinese record label Modern Sky and Finnish music organization ELMU. I was responsible for lighting design for three of the stages and the festival area. The main idea behind the design was to create something bold and fresh using only shades of white on the stages and no moving lights. I also focused on how the set-up looked in daylight as most of the bands performed before sunset. The area was really inspiring with it's roughness and having the main stage under an old crane was a brilliant idea from the technical producer Esa Kandelberg. I had the pleasure to work with great lighting operators who understood my ideas and brought them to life, while I operated the main stage my self. <image:title>Selected Works - Flash Flash</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Juuso Westerlund FLASH FLASH is a portrait of the American artist Andy Warhol – a lonely man surrounded by the masses. Warhol’s various existences – always scandalous – as a painter, filmmaker, media personality, and a thinker, crystallise many of the cultural and societal changes that characterise the most recent iteration of the Western cultural paradigm. Also insinuating their way into the picture are the United States and the Western way of life, along with their engine – consumerism. What in Warhol’s time was flamboyant fiction has become our reality. Flash Flash is an incandescent requiem that encompasses – just as Warhol’s art does – serenity and passion, religious art and pornography, trash and diamonds. The opera depicts The Modern Man who flirts with destruction and death, and is incessantly desirous of big effects and ease, of voyeurism and cheap melodrama, of buying and selling – all presented in a gilded frame: the world of opera, or opera as the world. The opera’s at once seductively melodious, yet also occasionally wholly pop-inflected pulse takes its beat from the rhythms and intonations of speech. Nuorvala utilises an unusual microtonal tuning system, known as just intonation to imbue the music with a fascinating sense of the unreal. <image:title>Selected Works - For God</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Katri Naukkarinen This contemporary solo performance explores the construction of meaning and the experience of meaningfulness. It considers critically the need to locate the meaning of existence somewhere outside the body, in gods and ideals, while, on the other hand, exploring the role of art as something that imitates the extrasensory. For this performance I wanted to bring a large visual element to the stage. One that would make the performer look small and have also a reference to religions and church spaces which have many aspects in common with theatre space. In both spaces the audience sits in the darker side of the space while most of the light is concentrated in the space in front of them. One key difference is the ceiling. In western churches the height of the space is often emphasised with for example a large window above the altar where as in contemporary stage the ceiling is merely a place to hide technical equipment necessary for the performance and often the audience is encouraged to ignore it’s existence. These thoughts formed into a slightly angled large rectangle which casts diffused white light on the stage. <image:caption>Astral Projections is a living installation and a performance that is situated somewhere in between dream and fiction. The work is inspired by experiences that happen at the outskirts of everyday physical realities, when the material body is sleeping or consuming entertainment. In the gallery space, different dream-bodies and their incarnations communicate together, creating a surreal ritual. The installation-performance merges documented dreams, mysticism and atmospheres from digital entertainment. <image:title>Selected Works - Odd Meters</image:title>
<image:caption>Odd Meters is a frenzied dance that bounces between rhythms in an attempt to reconstruct itself from fragments of dreams, time and the body. It works with rhythms found in the moment that overlap, argue and shake the flesh. Odd Meters* by Mikko Niemistö is based on the dreams he saw at the Bjällansås farm in Uddevalla, Sweden in summer 2018 while in residency there: the intertwined layers of natural cycles, dancing, and 4G connectivity to newsfeeds and entertainment, seeped into his night-time reality. Odd Meters explores a human body that is alienated from itself and its environment; it is lost in obsessive dreams, adventure fantasies of the digital realm and the polyrhythmic labyrinth of an illogical relationship with nature. In this intersection the chronic insomnia of a thoroughly technologized era collides with its own impossibility. The work desires to bring the experience of the dream to public circulation while working from a non-linear understanding of time. The performer is wide awake but simultaneously channelling unfiltered impulses swelling from the memories of REM dreams – fragments of stories where the narrator is not in control of the narrative. * Odd Meters is a musical term used to describe untypical time signatures. The working group is tracing how to use perception as a leading question in forming a compositional work. The direction and color of lighting was constantly changing slowly through out the performance. This resulted in a hypnotising combination with the delicate movement and seemed to manipulate the perception of time. <image:caption>Closed doors is first part of a death and surrender themed dance series by choreographer Alpo Aaltokoski. First part consist of two independent solo dance. The fact that the performance happens among the audience seating was one of the key starting points for the lighting design. I wanted to create a cozy atmosphere in which audience wouldn’t feel too exposed even though they’re sitting in the middle of the stage. I created oval shaped sheets of plastic that worked as diffusers to distribute soft light around the space. <image:title>Selected Works - Ningen</image:title>
<image:caption>At the heart of Ningen is the tacit knowledge that emerges from bodily experience and the wordless interaction with the environment. The work explores how the environment, including the audience, has an impact on dance in an ongoing moment and how the Japanese time-space concept ma 間 (interval in time and space) could be thought of as an interactive space between the audience member and the performer, among other manifestations of it. The work borrows its name from the human-meaning concept Ningen 人間 from Japanese Kyoto School philosopher Watsuji Tetsuro (1889-1960). Concept includes the individual and social side of human, consisting of kanji signs meaning human and ma. The work is the second artistic component of Mammu Rankanen's artistic research dissertation The Holder of Emptiness - Ma in the Formation of the Dancer's Internal and External Space at the Performing Arts Research Center (Tutke) of the Theatre Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. The rehearsals and performances of the work take place both at the Theater Academy and at the Dance House’s Pannuhalli. Two different venues as performance space is an essential part of the research. Opening the work process to the public will deepen the exploration of research issues related to the shared space of viewers and performers; How does the bodily experience of the work from the dancer’s perspective open to the viewer? How does the internal space of the dancer formulate the external space and relate to the experiences of the inner space of the co-dancers as well as the spectators? How does the external space affect the experience of the inner space and the dance that takes shape in an ongoing moment? <image:caption>Koneistos is a synthetic nature experience performed by climbing lamps and mechanical sounding machines. The installation consists of mechanical light and sound machinery and metal pipes. Facilitator and media artist Atte Olsonen’s art explores the interaction between mechanical and organic organisms. “As it plays, this orchestra of inanimate machines springs to life.” Light artist Teo Lanerva is fascinated by the subtle manipulation of the viewer’s perception. “I’m inspired by the interplay between light and shadow often seen in digital art. In Koneistos, the pipe climbing lamps create an enchanting parallel world where the shadows dance among the real-life audience.” The audience is invited to join the immersive and meditative journey that will blur their sense of time and place. Join us to witness the vivid dialogue of the machines and the spellbinding movements of the living shadows. <image:caption>The collaboration between Sanna Blennow and Mikko Niemistö is a dream about leaving the mundane repetition of everyday life, a proposal to merge and to get lost in the limbo. It embraces nothingness and the animal inside of us, venturing to the dark side. In a landscape of swinging microphones, traces of sweat lingers in the air. Two bodies on the threshold of tipping over are fighting against gravity, speaking in languages we can’t understand, moving in uncanny ways. The performance dwells in states of emptiness, anger and frustration and is searching for channels through which these can be projected. It zooms in on individuals caught in between action and apathy, trying to figure out their role in an ever growing reality of imaginary needs and emotional triggers. It embraces nothingness and the animal inside of us, venturing to the dark side. SOMETHING AND NOTHING ABOUT DARKNESS is an energetic performance where two bodies are constantly on the move. It is a collage of movement, text and sound which all arise from dream-like states coupled up with the urge to swim against the current. The performance is a dream about leaving the mundane repetition of everyday life, a proposal to merge and to get lost in the limbo. The performers are being pushed and pulled, forced into different constellations, scenarios and doings. <image:caption>Nuua’s vaarna is in the border between new circus and installation art. A surrealistic performance where installation art, juggling and physical theatre meets in obscure environment creating a performance that guides our senses in a hypnotic and mesmerising ways. With kinetic sculptures and big objets manipulated by two jugglers, Vaarna brings out the prestige of a simple graphical forms turning them into eccentric visual experiences. Graphical shapes and scenographical elements of the performance comes alive in the hands of the jugglers and surrealistic physical theatre creates playful images to present our personal obsessions as artists. Absurd scenes create a raw performance with mixture of black humour and oddness. Isn't pain a bit poetic as beauty? Can we lauch at painful and hurtful things? Taival interrogates this fragile separation that lives inside of us all, between an absolute freedom that inspires us and independency that gives essence of being human. Linked with manipulative games and domination these artist try to let go of it in order to find a refuge to their frustrations. <image:caption>Wakey-wakey is a psychedelic musical, by Mikko Niemistö. It promotes transitions from one layer of the subconscious to another. The stage piece relies on songs and texts echoing times of change, trance, love and death. Wakey-wakey dives into the internal reality of the mind through musical and ritualistic structures. In the performance, awakening is seen as becoming aware of the streams of the subconscious: the noise that lies under everyday life and can be glimpsed in memories of nightly visions and lapses into reverie. Wakey-wakey is like a revivalist movement that invites to wander into the shadowy realms of the mind. <image:caption>Helsinki Think Company organised their annual pitching competition and we had a party afterwards. This time a smaller venue provided more intimate atmosphere compared to last year. To emphasise the feeling of intimacy, I designed a quarter-ball shaped a matrix of warm lights which closed audience and performers inside it. To add an other layer to the space, also the space behind the structure was lit which emphasised the feeling that the audience and performers are sharing the same space. Towards the night fog got thicker making the feeling of privacy possible for the party people on the dance floor. Conventionally in club events this is achieved through darkness, but with thick fog also very blight lighting was possible. Lighting Design: Teo Lanerva Production: Parcero Live</image:caption>

It was a contemporary dance piece about predicement of the wolf and woman. About taking space and escaping from it. We ended up to lands of subconsious and dreaming. The lighting design formed around a concept of broken forest built using lighting fixtures hung at different levels. I wanted to give the space really three dimensional feeling as the event and the sound were moving around the audience. Most of the performance was lit using only these fresnels. The band expands itself with strings, brass and woodwinds, but the essential core is in it’s electronical beats pumped with acoustic percussion and epic soundscapes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Other Projects - Signmark</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Peve Hämäläinen Signmark is a hard hearing rap artist. We have concerts in most random places. For example once we performed in UN headquaters in NYC. Although the most rewarding gigs are the ones in small clubs where the most of the audience is deaf. Before I actually knew anything about video design I got a call from his producer and she asked me to join their team as a video designer. I replied that it sounds interesting, but I don't have the skills that the project would require. As she kept insisting despite that, I decided to agree as I had been interested in video design for quite a while. Now I had the motivation to study and started to watch youtube tutorials. Now one year later I feel like I'm starting to understand the medium better and have learnt some basic vj and after effects skills.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Photo: Aku Häyrynen Organorgan is an organism created in synergy by living plants, humans, analog mechanics and digital technology. It was the main artistic work as part of my bachelors degree. It was a hour lasting experience for the experiencers in a studio space. During the process we worked as a group and viewed our occupations more as fields of expertise rather than something that would set the exact nature of work. The hearth of the organism was programming made with MAX/MSP. It analysed data gathered from the spectators by skin conductivity and pressure sensors and changed it to stage directions, sound scapes and lighting scenes. <image:caption>Photo: Kai Bäckström Etiäinen was a school production at the Theatre Academy of Helsinki in collaboration with Sibelius Academy and Aalto University. It was a musical theatre piece which consisted of three parts made by three separate working groups. With the lead dramaturg we where the only two people working in all of them. It was quite challenging project to manage as a second year student as mostly I had to be at least in two places at the same time. It was also very rewarding as I feel at home in big spaces. <image:title>2016 - Wind Etude</image:title>
<image:caption>more Wind Etude was the artistic part of choreographer Soili Huhtakallio's master thesis in the Theatre Academy of Helsinki. <image:caption>We had a three week residency with our project Mechanit 2.0 and we’re getting step by step closer to premiere. Mechanit is a performance-installation where lighting fixtures and sound instruments are the performers. The work searches for beauty and warmth from aesthetics of cold metal pieces and the mechanical movements of machines. The aim is to spark conversation on the relationships of humans and natural networks, materials, machines and technology. The audience is invited inside a vast structure covering 100m2 of space and reaching to the height of five meters we call synthetic forest. This is the habitat of dozens of small mechanical creatures who communicate through movement, sounds and light. As the performance is perceived from within the structure and the mechanical creatures are moving all around you, the experience is very immersive and immediate. We are also present in the space, although not in the centre of attention as performers, but as the caretakers of the forest. We invite you to experience this unique and intimate experience. During one hour the creatures of the forest will take you on a meditative journey through places you’ve never been before. It’s not only something sensed by watching and listening, but a multi sensory event.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2019 - 4uni + 44Party 2019</image:title>
<image:caption>Helsinki Think Company organised their annual pitching competition and we had a party afterwards. This time a smaller venue provided more intimate atmosphere compared to last year. To emphasise the feeling of intimacy, I designed a quarter-ball shaped a matrix of warm lights which closed audience and performers inside it. To add an other layer to the space, also the space behind the structure was lit which emphasised the feeling that the audience and performers are sharing the same space. Towards the night fog got thicker making the feeling of privacy possible for the party people on the dance floor. Conventionally in club events this is achieved through darkness, but with thick fog also very blight lighting was possible. more 4uni aftermovie 44party aftermovie Lighting Design: Teo Lanerva Production: Parcero Live</image:caption>

      <image:title>2019 - Performing Perception</image:title>
<image:caption>more This performance deals with perception from two perspectives: perception as an experienced phenomenon and the performative side of perception. The working group is tracing how to use perception as a leading question in forming a compositional work. The lighting was in a constant slow state of change through out the performance always changing its direction and color. This resulted in a hypnotising combination with the delicate movement and seemed to manipulate the perception of time. <image:title>2019 - For God</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Katri Naukkarinen more This contemporary solo performance explores the construction of meaning and the experience of meaningfulness. <image:title>2019 - Flash Flash</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Juuso Westerlund more FLASH FLASH is a portrait of the American artist Andy Warhol – a lonely man surrounded by the masses. <image:title>2019 - Liquid Line</image:title>
<image:caption>at LUX Helsinki 2019 more In this installation, light engages in a discussion with gravity using water as an interpreter. When reflected through swinging water, light – which is normally beyond the reach of gravity – bends, yet always returns to its starting point as if it had mass. This discussion between the elements creates a motion that is both familiar and strange at the same time. 5min10sec loop.</image:caption>
